First year junior Karl Strugnell who is just starting his third year (2004) riding for the Uckfield based Jim Walker RT has had a busy year riding most disciplines from hill climbs to rollers. With age group medals in hill climb and the 25 mile national time trial. And personal bests of 56.14 25 miles and 21.11 for miles, his time trialing and track ability has brought him to the attention of a top Belgium team.

Karl has signed a one year deal with EDL - Prolacon Mar-DJ Matic based in Lendelede West Flanders.

The mainly juvenile / junior 62 member team has in the past seen many of today's stars pass through their ranks under their previous team name Kortrijk Groeningespurters.

Karl will be spending around six months of the year in Belgium in two to three week stints and then commuting between Belgium and here to compete in all the GB national championships under the Jim Walker RT flag. Jim Walker is very pleased to see Karl move up to race abroad and is looking forward to hopefully see Karl re-sign for the team in 2005 and make a start up the continental racing ladder.

Karl's Comments. " Its quite a daunting thing to happen at my age (17), contracts, language, Etc but I am sure that this is the right way to move upwards and onwards. I have a very good UK sponsor in Jim Walker who has been, and still is the most supportive and enthusiastic person I could have behind me and has given me nothing but his support in this big step. This is a large team with Spanish and Belgium main sponsors and it‚s a bit strange to be told that you always have a following car when out training, a team masseur, and team cars to take to and from the races as well as a super house to live in. All expenses paid and some money to spend.

The team launch is In Belgium in January where I pick up all my race clothes and casual clothing ETC for the year. My first 2004 Belgium race is a local race in February before going to Spain for two weeks training in March ready for the start of the season proper.

I mustn't overlook to thank my family for all their help and when I asked my dad if he will miss me he said "yes, but at least I'll get a lay in on Sundays".
